Esther: For Such a Time as This
“And who knows but that you have come to your position for such a time as this?” - Esther 4:14
As the sun sets on this Day 1 of our journey through the Fruits of the Spirit, I want to leave you with a story. A story about a woman who loved when it would have been easier to hide.
A story about agape love that costs everything.
The Setup
Esther was a Jewish girl living in exile. An orphan. A minority. A woman in a world where women had little power.
Yet somehow - through circumstances that seemed random but were anything but - she became queen of Persia.
Safe. Comfortable. Hidden.
Until the day came when her entire people were marked for death.
The Choice
Her cousin Mordecai sent word: Go to the king. Beg for mercy. Save your people.
But there was a problem. Anyone who approached the king uninvited could be put to death. And Esther hadnt been summoned.
She could stay silent and live. Or she could speak and die.
Mordecais words cut through every excuse:
“Do not think that because you are in the kings house you alone of all the Jews will escape… And who knows but that you have come to your position for such a time as this?”
Her Response
This is where agape love shines brightest.
Esther didnt hesitate. She didnt negotiate. She didnt ask for guarantees.
She said:
“Go, gather together all the Jews… and fast on my behalf… I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law.
And if I perish, I perish.”
- Esther 4:16
“If I Perish, I Perish”
Say that out loud. Let it sink in.
“If I perish, I perish.”
Thats not the words of someone calculating risk. Thats the words of someone who has already died to herself.
Esther wasnt hoping to survive. She was willing to die for people who couldnt repay her.
Thats agape love.
- Not love that feels good
- Not love that benefits you
- Not love that plays it safe
Love that lays down its life.
The Echo of the Cross
Do you hear it?
Esthers words echo through the centuries and find their fullest meaning in another garden, on another night, when another Son of God faced His own moment of choice:
“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” - Luke 22:42
Esther: “If I perish, I perish.” Jesus: “Not my will, but yours.”
Both willing to die for people who didnt deserve it. Both stepping into the gap. Both saying yes when no would have been safer.
What This Means for You
Maybe youre not facing a death sentence like Esther.
But you have your own “for such a time as this” moments:
- The conversation youre avoiding with a struggling friend
- The forgiveness youre withholding from someone who hurt you
- The boundary you need to set even though it might cost the relationship
- The truth you need to speak even though it might be unpopular
- The sacrifice no one will see - time, money, comfort, reputation
Agape love always costs something.
And you will have your moment to choose:
- Stay silent and stay safe?
- Or step forward, and if you perish, you perish?
Tonights Reflection
As you close your eyes tonight, ask yourself:
-
Where is God calling me to love like Esther? Who needs me to step into the gap, even at cost to myself?
-
What am I holding back from God? What safety, comfort, or control am I unwilling to surrender?
-
“For such a time as this” - What position, platform, or opportunity has God given you that might be for someone elses sake, not just your own?
-
Can you pray “If I perish, I perish”? What would it look like to trust God with the outcome enough to risk everything?
A Prayer for Courage
Father, Esthers story humbles me. She was willing to die for her people. Your Son was willing to die for me.
Show me where Youre calling me to love like this. Give me courage to step forward when it would be easier to hide. Help me trust You with the outcome.
If I perish, I perish - because You are worthy.
In Jesus name, Amen.
