The Message in the Vessel

I heard this song recently and it hit me right in the chest. Not because it’s catchy — though it is — but because it says out loud what I’ve felt for years but could never articulate.

“Don’t look at me, don’t judge the vessel… you’re missing the message.”

That line. That’s the whole thing right there.

My Resume Doesn’t Impress Anyone

The song talks about how we get so caught up in someone’s background, their credentials, their “pedigree” — and we completely miss what God is actually doing through them. The artist puts it bluntly:

Why you looking at my resume? Why you looking at my bank account?

Yeah. That hits different when you’re me.

I’m an ex-felon. If you looked at my resume, my past, my mistakes — you’d see plenty of reasons to disqualify me. The world certainly did. But here’s what I’ve learned: God doesn’t ask for references. He looks at the heart.

God’s History of Using the Unlikely

The song goes through a list of people God chose throughout Scripture — and honestly, it’s a roster of misfits:

  • Moses — a stutterer called to speak for God
  • David — a shepherd boy who killed a giant
  • Paul — a murderer who became the apostle to the Gentiles
  • Mary — a virgin chosen to bring the Savior into the world

God’s been using unlikely people since the very first time He opened His mouth.

I used to think my past disqualified me from being used by God. Now I understand — my past is exactly why He can use me. Because when God takes someone broken and does something beautiful through them, there’s no question who gets the glory. It’s not about me. It never was.

Just a Messenger

The chorus keeps repeating something that’s become my daily prayer:

I’m just a messenger… I’m just a vessel… don’t miss the message.

That’s it. That’s the testimony I want to live.

I’m not here to impress you with my credentials. I don’t have any. I’m not here to show you how put-together my life is — because honestly, it’s not. I’m here to point you to the One who took my mess and turned it into a message.

We are messengers. Just vessels. God takes our mess and uses it to send a message.

That’s not just a clever phrase. That’s my whole story.

To the Broken

The song ends with this:

Cause God is speaking through the unlikely, to the broken, through me.

If you’re reading this and you feel disqualified — like your past is too messy, your mistakes too big, your story too broken — let me tell you something:

You’re exactly who God is looking for.

Not despite your brokenness. Through your brokenness.

He doesn’t need perfect vessels. He needs willing ones. He doesn’t need polished presentations. He needs surrendered hearts.

Scripture Connection

This message echoes throughout Scripture:

“But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong.” — 1 Corinthians 1:27

“But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.” — 2 Corinthians 4:7

We are the jars of clay. Cracked. Imperfect. Easily broken. But inside? That’s where the treasure is. That’s where God puts His message.

The Bottom Line

So when you hear my story — the felonies, the failures, the years I spent running from God — don’t get stuck on the vessel. Look past it. Because the same God who used Moses, David, and Paul is still in the business of using unlikely people.

Don’t look at me. Look at what He’s done.

That’s the message. And I’m just grateful He let me be part of delivering it.

What has God redeemed in your life? How is He using your story to reach others? I’d love to hear your testimony in the comments.
