Love (Agape)
A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. — John 13:34
What It Is NOT
- A warm feeling or romantic emotion
- Attraction based on appearance or personality
- Conditional on the other persons behavior
Gods Perspective
Agape love is the sacrificial choice to pursue anothers good regardless of cost. It seeks nothing in return — it gives freely, forgives endlessly, and chooses the other persons welfare above its own.
This is the love Christ demonstrated on the cross, and the love the Spirit produces in us — even for our enemies.
Biblical Example
Jesus washing His disciples feet — including Judas, who would betray Him. He served the very man who would hand Him over to death.
Practical Application
- Serve someone who cant repay you
- Forgive someone who doesnt deserve it
- Choose kindness when youd rather be right
- Pray for those who oppose you
Reflection Questions
- Who in your life needs agape love right now?
- Where are you withholding love because someone doesnt deserve it?
- How can you show Christs love to an enemy this week?
Prayer
Father, produce Your agape love in me. Help me love others the way Jesus loved — sacrificially, unconditionally, and without expecting anything in return. Transform my heart to reflect Your love. Amen.
