Peace - Part 2: How to Apply God’s Peace in Daily Life
Yesterday, we explored the stark contrast between the world’s peace and God’s peace. The world offers circumstantial calm—peace that crumbles when storms arrive. But God’s peace is different. It’s supernatural, steadfast, and available to you right now, regardless of your circumstances.
So how do we move from knowing about God’s peace to actually living in it? How do we apply this divine gift to our messy, complicated daily lives?
Peace Is a Choice, Not a Feeling
Here’s a truth that can transform your life: peace is a choice, not a feeling. Too often, we wait to feel peaceful before we believe we have peace. We think, “Once this problem is solved, once this stress is gone, once everything lines up perfectly—then I’ll have peace.”
But Scripture teaches us something radically different. In Colossians 3:15, Paul commands us: “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.” The word “rule” here means to arbitrate, to umpire, to decide. Peace isn’t something that happens to you—it’s something you actively choose to let govern your heart.
Feelings are fickle. They rise and fall like the tide. But choices? Choices stand firm. When you choose peace, you’re not denying reality or pretending everything is fine. You’re making a deliberate decision to trust God’s character over your circumstances.
Surrendering Control to God
The greatest obstacle to peace is often our desperate grip on control. We want to manage every outcome, predict every variable, and protect ourselves from every possible pain. But here’s the beautiful liberating truth: you were never meant to carry that burden.
Peter writes in 1 Peter 5:7, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” Notice the word “cast”—it’s an active, decisive throw. It’s the picture of heaving a heavy load off your shoulders and onto Someone strong enough to carry it.
Surrender isn’t passive resignation. It’s active trust. It’s saying, “God, I release my need to control this situation. I trust Your wisdom more than my own. I believe You’re working even when I can’t see it.”
This surrender happens in both the small things and the big things. Whether it’s a difficult conversation at work, a financial worry, a family conflict, or a health concern—the principle remains the same. God isn’t only interested in the “spiritual” areas of your life. He wants to bring peace to all of it.
Trusting God’s Sovereignty
When we choose peace and surrender control, we’re essentially declaring that God is sovereign—that He’s on the throne, not us. This truth is our anchor.
Proverbs 3:5-6 gives us the pathway: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Notice the progression:
- Trust with all your heart — Complete reliance, not partial
- Don’t lean on your own understanding — Your perspective is limited; His is infinite
- Submit in all your ways — Every area of life, not just Sunday morning
- He will make your paths straight — God’s promise to guide and direct
Trusting God’s sovereignty doesn’t mean you’ll understand everything that happens. It means you trust the One who does understand. It means believing that God is good even when life is hard, that He’s faithful even when circumstances suggest otherwise.
Peace in Decision-Making
One of the most practical places God’s peace applies is in decision-making. How many sleepless nights have you spent wrestling with choices? How much energy have you expended trying to figure out the “right” path?
Philippians 4:6-7 provides the antidote: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
The formula is clear:
- Don’t be anxious — A command, not a suggestion
- Pray about everything — Bring it all to God
- With thanksgiving — Gratitude shifts your perspective
- God’s peace guards you — Like a sentinel protecting your heart
When you’ve prayed about a decision, when you’ve sought God’s wisdom through Scripture and godly counsel, when you’ve surrendered the outcome to Him—you can move forward in peace. You don’t need to see the entire path. You just need to trust the Guide.
Putting It Into Practice
So what does this look like on a Tuesday morning when you’re overwhelmed?
-
Pause and choose — When anxiety rises, stop and consciously choose peace. Say aloud, “I choose God’s peace right now.”
-
Surrender specifically — Name the thing you’re trying to control. Pray, “God, I release this to You. I trust You with it.”
-
Thank Him — List three things you’re grateful for, even in the midst of difficulty.
-
Take the next step — Don’t wait for perfect clarity. Take the next faithful step in peace.
Tomorrow’s Journey
God’s peace isn’t just for calm days—it’s especially for stormy ones. Tomorrow, we’ll tackle one of the biggest peace-stealers we all face: anxiety and worry. We’ll explore how to experience God’s peace even when your mind is racing and your heart is heavy.
For today, remember this: Peace is available to you right now. Not tomorrow, not when circumstances change, not when you finally get it all figured out. Right now. Choose it. Receive it. Live in it.
